“Safewastes” is an EU project in which 7 countries (Austria, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland), several universities and companies/industries are involved. The basic idea is the sensible utilization of plant residues from the pharmaceutical and food industries and the establishment of new processing methods. Large amounts of residue remain in juice production (e.g. mango, carrot), the production of phytopharmaceuticals (e.g. willow bark extract, milk thistle extract, artichoke juice) and also in oil production (e.g. linseed, sunflower). Tons of such residues are created every year, which then have to be disposed of at great cost. Most of it is composted or used to produce heat. One goal of the “Safewastes” project is to process this “waste” into high-quality feed additives with a therapeutic effect or into nutritional supplements for human consumption. A special mixture was produced for the feeding trial, which is intended to help the piglets adapt to the new conditions as quickly and well as possible after weaning. The mixture consists, among other things, of carrot juice residue, the pectins of which have been found to block adherence (adhesive processes of E.coli/colidiarrhea). The plant-based mixture is fed to 24 piglets in 4 test runs and tested against a control group that receives standard rearing feed without additives. Various parameters are collected over a period of 3 weeks (weight gain, feed conversion, immune parameters, bacteriological fecal samples, diarrhea score) in order to be able to make statements about the effectiveness of this mixture. The feeding trial is being carried out in cooperation with the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Institute for Applied Botany (Mag. S. Stockhammer) in Wels/Thalheim. carried out.
