Animal genetic resources and organic agendas

The Austrian National Society for Gene Reserves (ÖNGENE) is the national focus for animal genetic resources in Austria. On this scientific platform, research, animal breeding and private genetic breeding meet and work together to develop solutions for the conservation breeding of rare breeds of livestock.

The technical suggestions serve the Ministry of Life as a basis for the “Rare Breeds” measure as part of the Austrian program for environmentally friendly agriculture (ÖPUL).

Since 1998, ÖNGENE's management has been based at the Institute for Organic Agriculture and Livestock Biodiversity.
