The preservation of ecologically valuable areas and the sustainable maintenance of cultural landscapes with the help of established and rare breeds of livestock represents a valuable contribution to the preservation of agricultural structures, sustainable cultural landscape and environmental protection, the preservation of animal genetic resources and the economic stabilization of rural regions.

To date, there is no Austria-wide overview of grazing projects that pursue the goal of landscape conservation. The initial recording and cataloging will lead to a systematic overview of the topic. The goals of the project are:

    • An Austria-wide catalog of grazing projects relevant to landscape conservation using established and rare livestock breeds.
    • Collection of basic data for the future systematic treatment of further research questions.
    • Creation of a data basis to support funding policy decisions and measures in the future.
