Further development and testing of a measuring system for quantifying atmospheric nitrogen deposition in a soil/plant system

The common determination methods for the quantification of N deposition from the atmosphere are “wet and dry-only” and “bulk collector”.

The results from these collectors vary depending on the method of collection, but do not include gaseous deposition and direct N uptake by the plant. The ITΝΙ measuring system (ITNI = Integral Total Nitrogen Input) was developed for the exact direct determination of the total atmospheric N input into the soil-plant system (Russow and Weigel, 2000).

The novelty in this project is to further develop or standardize this system and to carry out measurements on regionally representative areas with uniform plants.

    Goals of the project:

    • Technical revision and further development of the existing ITNI concept
    • Simplification of the sampling process and 15 N analysis
    • Creation of a prototype and testing of the concept at three locations (Gumpenstein, Stoderzinken, Wagna)
    • Evaluation of the site-specific N deposition data

The further developed and standardized measurement system is interesting for environmental monitoring networks such as those of the Federal Environment Agency, state governments and chambers of agriculture. Furthermore, it can be used for research questions in scientific environments (research institutes, universities) and thus contribute valuable information on the influence of atmospheric N deposition on fertilization and use in agriculture and forestry.
