Although Miscanthus is recommended as a plant for the grain maize area according to previous descriptions, a field trial with this plant has been running in the middle Enns Valley under organic cultivation conditions since 2006. In the meantime, considerable dry matter yields have already been harvested, which have almost the same yield potential as stocks in favorable locations.
In order to be able to document the further development of the Miscanthus population in the following years, this follow-up project to the already completed WT was started. The aim is to investigate at what point in time the maximum yield is reached and at what point dry matter yields begin to decline. In addition, the changes in individual plants should be observed when rhizomes die inside the rootstocks and open spaces appear there.
In addition, a miscanthus experiment is to be set up in the Upper Austrian Alpine foothills, at the branch of the Organic Agriculture Department Lambach Stadl-Paura. This means that two different climatic areas can be examined with their influence on the growth of Miscanthus. In this experiment, which is carried out on a much larger area, the harvested crop is intended to be used for various purposes for further scientific studies.
