In Austria, male piglets are routinely castrated to prevent sexual odor (“boar taint”). Agricultural stakeholders at European level expect that surgical castration of pigs without anesthesia will be phased out by January 1, 2018.

Piglet castration is a much-discussed topic in the pig industry, which makes it all the more important to develop an acceptable alternative to conventional castration without anesthesia. The aim of this scientific activity is to determine the suitability of general anesthesia using the injection method. The following goals are pursued in detail:

-) practical feasibility of injection anesthesia during castration of piglets (piglets older than 14 days)
-) recording the time required per animal
-) checking the cost-effectiveness of this method
-) checking the elimination of pain by documenting the reaction of the piglets during of castration.
