Organic grassland and agriculture

The primary goal of this study is to find grazing methods that ensure a stable and healthy plant population in the long term. Vital soil is a prerequisite here. The soil has always been of great importance in organic farming and careful handling of it is a basic principle.

The aim of the experiment is to determine the effects on the soil caused by the animals' footsteps and excretions. Furthermore, changes in the plant population and the yield of the grassland stock can provide an indicator for the soil-plant system.

One goal is to check whether there are differences in the soil and plant populations when the area is used as permanent pasture or as hay pasture. All of this from the perspective of the permanent grassland in the Eastern Alps.

Goals:

  • What influence does grazing have on soil compaction and soil ingredients?
  • What long-term changes can be expected in the plant population in pasture, hay pasture or cutting
  • How high is the yield for pasture, hay pasture and cutting use
