This problem and the associated deterioration in the ecological condition now affects many areas that are protected. Mechanical control at the time of the summer solstice is not possible due to the presence of protected ground breeders and the prevention of natural seeding (change in vegetation type). The methods of transferring fresh cuttings in late summer or overseeding with regional seeds from meadow threshing in winter should prevent the spread of unwanted species and also ensure an increase in species diversity. In connection with this, different strategies and techniques are available for establishing the desired vegetation, the advantages and disadvantages of which will be evaluated as part of this project.
Long-term studies are carried out directly in the NATURA 2000 area Wörschacher Moor (Styria) and in the Weidmoos bird sanctuary (Salzburg).
The methods successfully implemented in the project are to be made available to practitioners, a wide range of interested people and institutions (national parks, NGOs, engineering and landscape planning offices, nature conservation authorities, schools...) through lectures, publications and brochures.
