Fruit rot and leaf drought that began at the end of July have been causing significant losses in the Styrian oil pumpkin yield for several years. Two projects are dedicated to the causes of these diseases and the biology of the most important pathogens and pests.

Fruit rot of oil squash is a disease that became more prevalent in the Styrian pumpkin fields for the first time in 2004 and led to worrying yield losses in 2005. Studies carried out in 2006 into yield losses due to rot showed an average percentage of rotten pumpkins of around 20%. Since then, fruit rot has been observed every year in varying degrees of intensity and affects not only the yield, but also the quality of the kernel oil.
