Increasing the soil organic carbon pool is considered a promising measure to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The 4 per mille initiative was launched at COP 21 (Paris 2015), in which optimal management of arable land, grassland and forests is intended to increase organic carbon in the soil by 0.4% annually. The project aims to evaluate whether the organic carbon pool of the soil can be increased accordingly through grassland management.
