Management organic pig

The care of lactating breeding sows in organic farming represents a major challenge. The effect of two rations with different ingredients on the health and performance of the animals is tested over 2 years.

In the area of piglet production, the care of the breeding sow during the nursing period plays a special role. The transition period for supplying organically raised animals with conventional feed ends at the end of 2011. Currently, up to 10% of conventional ration components are mixed into organic rations. Protein feeds are primarily added. Covering the relatively high requirement for essential amino acids brings with it a number of problems, especially under the conditions of 100% organic feeding. Due to the long nursing period (at least 40 days), the performance-based care of the organic breeding sow is of great importance, especially with regard to restocking after weaning. The aim of the project is to test two specific ration concepts with high implementation potential in an exact test. A ration type represents an unbalanced feed mixture that often occurs in practice. The second ration concept is designed to be optimized in terms of amino acid composition and is intended to represent the scenarios “commercially produced complete feed” or “farm mix with commercial protein concentrate”. The blood and

Hormone analyzes during the nursing period are used to check the metabolic load and to estimate the chances of successful re-breeding.
