School classes from all over Austria participated, tasked with creating wildflower meadows, conducting site analyses, and observing pollinators visiting the flowering plants. The 2L class also took part, supported by their biology teacher, Verena Mayer. The students were particularly enthusiastic about the fact that they could participate in the research from home. This provided them with a meaningful and engaging activity to pursue during the numerous lockdowns. The class recorded data from a total of 36 site analyses and 40 pollinator observations. Honeybees and bumblebees, as well as various wild bee species, were frequently found at the wildflower meadows.
The prize for their outstanding achievement was a check for 750 euros for the class fund, which was happily accepted together with Direktor Dr. Johann Gasteiner and Head of Department DI Othmar Breitenbaumer. The class celebrated during their last biology lesson before the Christmas holidays with a fantastic party package provided by the Center for Young Science, which organizes the Citizen Science Award annually.
