Project completed: Tube ventilation sustainably improves barn climate and animal welfare

In modern livestock barns, the barn climate presents a key challenge. Horses and cattle, in particular, suffer from heat stress and poor air quality.

The aim of the project was to test the effectiveness of hose ventilation systems for improving climatic conditions and to derive practical recommendations.

This is how the research was conducted

Between July 2024 and January 2025, a hose ventilation system (Vet.Smart) with automated controls was tested on a horse farm. This system was compared to natural ventilation in individual stall housing. Temperature, humidity, airflow velocity, and dust levels in the stable were examined. A sensor-controlled ventilation system adjusted the system to seasonal requirements.

Selected results and conclusions

The studies showed a significant improvement in the barn climate. Temperature peaks were effectively reduced during the summer months (by an average of 1.8 °C), thus mitigating heat stress. Relative humidity was also lowered, which particularly reduces the risk of respiratory diseases. A continuous supply of fresh air was ensured year-round without any drafts.

Crucially, dust levels were significantly reduced by an average of 16%. This has a direct positive impact on animal health, particularly with regard to the sensitive respiratory tract of horses. The automated ventilation system demonstrated high reliability and responsiveness to changing climatic conditions.

Overall, the project results confirm that, when clear installation and operating guidelines are followed, hose ventilation systems are a highly recommended measure for sustainable climate optimization. They contribute significantly to animal-friendly husbandry and an improved barn climate – both in summer and winter.
