Expert meeting on peatland restoration at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein
Bogs and peatlands play a significant role in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity , and providing flood protection. However, the majority of bogs in Austria have been drained, and the extent and condition of the remaining peatlands are unknown.
In the fromMOIST project funded by the Biodiversity Fundunder the Project management AGES, The aim is to survey peat soils throughout Austria and assess their suitability for regeneration. To describe the degradation of peat soils and their vegetation, the project team met at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein on June 20th and 21st, 2024, to exchange expertise on the key areas of focus. Under the leadership of Andreas Bohner, grassland sites and peatlands in the Enns Valley and Salzkammergut region were examined, and the further procedure regarding designation criteria was discussed.
