The Higher Federal Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture (HBLFA) has been conducting practice-oriented research for agriculture for more than 60 years, especially for grassland and livestock farms in the Alpine region.
Due to its central location in the Alpine region, very favorably situated at the intersection of the Limestone and Central Alps, the site, with an average annual precipitation of approximately 1000 mm and a mean annual temperature of 7.2°C, is representative of a large part of the Alpine region. The experimental results obtained can be directly transferred and applied to large areas both domestically and internationally.
At its central location in Gumpenstein near Irdning, the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein currently manages approximately 150 hectares. To document the diverse soil and climate conditions within the Alpine region, the HBLFA maintains permanent field stations in Admont, Oberalm near Hallein (Winklhof), Piber, and Kobenz near Knittelfeld. Across all departments, approximately 9,000 experimental plots are managed. Since June 2002, the Institute for Organic Agriculture and Biodiversity in Wels-Thalheim and Lambach has been affiliated with the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein.
