For livestock farmers, the care of their grazing animals has always been paramount. While for the past 150 years the focus has been on keeping herds together through appropriate measures and protecting them from dangers such as severe weather or parasites, the return of the wolf has brought herd protection to the forefront of importance. Depending on the situation, herd protection encompasses many different measures to prevent damage to grazing livestock from predators. At the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein agricultural college, efforts are being made to familiarize farmers with herd protection and even offer workshops that provide insights into how such a herd protection fence is erected, how the system works, and how much it can actually prevent.
