Animal, technology and environment

The Institute for Animals, Technology and Environment addresses a broad spectrum of specialist topics in livestock farming, primarily in the area of ​​monogastric animals (pigs, poultry, horses). For this purpose, it has a research barn for fattening pigs (for approximately 400 animals), a flexibly usable barn for poultry farming (fattening, egg production), and a manure testing laboratory .


There is a close connection with agricultural practice: In this context, many questions are taken directly from practice and dealt with in our own stables, but also on and with practical farms (on-farm).

a testing body certified by the specialist agency for animal-friendly husbandry and animal welfare, the Institute for Animal, Technology and Environment also carries out testing activities on novel stable systems and husbandry technology for pigs, poultry and horses.

Research goals and areas of responsibility of the institute:

  • Scientific analysis of issues related to agricultural barn construction, animal husbandry and housing technology
  • Scientific studies in the areas of animal welfare, stable climate and animal health
  • Recording, assessment and evaluation of emissions and immissions from animal husbandry as well as in the area of Innenwirtschaft and along the manure supply chain
  • Analysis and evaluation of new processes in internal mechanization
  • Investigation of manure additives regarding their effect on gaseous, environmentally relevant emissions, odor and consistency
  • Addressing socio-economic, business and labor management issues in agriculture
  • Scientific data processing and research on the process and efficiency of agricultural energy and material flows
  • Evaluation of agricultural policy measures with regard to socio-economically and ecologically sustainable farm development
