Contribution of peatlands to climate protection and biodiversity (MoorRenat)

Peatlands are peat-forming plant communities with characteristic species. They provide numerous ecosystem services and fulfill important landscape ecological functions: they are large water reservoirs, water filters , and important retention areas during heavy rainfall events. This research project is a sub-project of the LIFE project "AMooRe".

The project manager was involved in the Austrian Moorland Strategy 2030+. The goal of the LIFE project AMooRe (Austrian Moor Restoration) is to put the Austrian Moorland Strategy 2030+ into practice. In autumn 2024, the LIFE project team asked the project manager of the proposed research project to become a project partner in AMooRe. His collaboration is intended to improve applied moorland conservation, and especially the transfer of knowledge to the agricultural sector.

The primary objectives of the proposed research project are:

  • Survey and analysis of species composition and biodiversity in selected bogs in the Styrian Enns Valley
  • Determination of aboveground phytomass and nutrient removal through mowing
  • Participation in CO2,CH4andN2Ofluxmeasurements in peat soils
  • Participation in the implementation of the Austrian peatland strategy 2030+

The following services are planned within the scope of the proposed research project:

  • Vegetation surveys and data analysis
  • Determination of aboveground plant biomass and nutrient removal through mowing
  • Participation in CO2, CH4 and N2O flux measurement
  • Participation in the implementation of the Austrian peatland strategy 2030+
  • Publications in domestic and foreign journals
  • lectures
  • Organization and execution of a conference (environmental ecology symposium)
