Caritas: Food is valuable - Podcast 74

Don't waste valuable food - Caritas can help!

The cost of living is rising sharply. The number of people requesting food from Styrian food banks is also increasing. "We are seeing more and more people who are under such pressure due to inflation and rising rent and energy costs that they have nothing left for food," says CaritasdirektorNora Tödtling-Musenbichler.

This podcast explains how food rescue works in Styria

Caritas, with over 2,500 employees in Styria and many volunteers, has made it its mission to support people in need in our region. To this end, they have developed, among other things, the following food rescue initiatives :

  • goods with an almost expired best-before date that can no longer be sold and to distribute them to food banks for people in need.
  • Food donations to provide reliable long-term support for people in need
    – for example, the "Herz" campaign , in which over 60 Spar supermarkets in Styria participate, or
food donations of agricultural products (surpluses, products with "visual defects", ...)
  • and various donations in kind.

In order for the system to function, Caritas is constantly challenged: First, they have to get to the food that needs rescuing, in order to then distribute it to those in need.

How Caritas tries to master the logistical challenges of food rescue - from finding and collecting the products, from storage to distribution - can be learned in this podcast with Ms. Eva Bakalli, Head of the Region and Engagement Department of Caritas Styria .

You will also learn how you can get involved and support people in need with donations of time, goods and money.

Listen in and get an idea of how food rescue and support for needy people currently works in Styria.
