The Enns Valley, as an alpine region, is more severely affected by climate change than the European average. The effects are already noticeable in the region. Extreme weather events, in particular, cause natural disasters such as mudslides and floods. Forestry is also increasingly under pressure. It is crucial to raise awareness among citizens of all ages about how they can best prepare and adapt. The three Upper Styrian municipalities of Öblarn, Sölk, and Michaelerberg-Pruggern have designated themselves as a Climate Change Adaptation Model Region (KLAR!) and aim to implement awareness-raising measures for the population as well as regionally tailored climate change adaptation measures.
Since 2017, 25 projects have already been implemented, focusing on the following areas:
- Disaster relief & infrastructure
- Forestry & Biodiversity as well as
- Education implemented.
The concept for the unique natural hazard demonstration model "Öblarn Water Experience ," which received the Neptune State Prize for Water Education in 2023, was also developed within the KLAR! initiative. Now, the three KLAR! municipalities have also been nominated for the CliA State Prize for Climate Change Adaptation from the Ministry for Climate Protection with their torrent management project "We won't let our village flood!"
