Heat, drought, feed shortage: How cattle farms can react quickly and effectively now.
Heat and drought are leaving their mark on many grassland and forage farms. When yields decline, it quickly becomes clear: the available forage might not last until the next harvest. But what can be done?
Waiting is the wrong strategy now. A realistic feed balance will show how large the gap actually is. Then, targeted decisions need to be made: Buy more feed? Use straw and alternative feedstuffs? Feed more concentrate? Adjust the ration? Or even reduce the number of animals?
In the podcast “Agrar Science – Wissen kompakt” (Agricultural Science – Compact Knowledge), Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andreas Steinwidder talks with DI Karl Wurm, feed consultant of the Styrian Chamber of Agriculture, about how farms can react quickly and professionally in the event of an acute shortage of forage.
This is all about practical application: How do I calculate my feed supplies? Which animals absolutely need high-quality forage? How much straw can be used? What alternatives are there to hay and grass silage? When is more concentrated feed advisable? What do I need to consider when purchasing feed – and when should I even consider adjusting my livestock numbers?
A podcast episode with specific tips for all cattle farmers who now need to secure their feed supply.
