Herd, dog and shepherdess on the alpine pasture - 79th podcast

Guided grazing management as a possible adaptation to current challenges in alpine farming

Extensive grazing in alpine regions is of high ecological, social, and economic importance. Alpine pastures shape our cultural landscape. Nevertheless, alpine farming faces many challenges.

Guided grazing offers a way to respond to these issues. It enables

  • improved animal monitoring,
  • simplified access to individual animals and
  • a more optimal use of the alpine pasture. Furthermore, it is
  • the basis for livestock protection.

Qualified herders play a central role in this process. This podcast episode explains why managed grazing is important, what it can look like, and what tasks herders perform.
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andreas Steinwidder and DIin Maria Naynar take you to the alpine pastures – to where the air gets a little thinner.
