organized HBLFA the 2nd Austrian Horse Hay Projectto evaluate a total of 718 horse hay analyses conducted since 2019.
Compared to 10 years ago, the current data showed a positive trend towards better hay quality . Nevertheless, about a third of the horse hay samples were still contaminated with spoilage-indicating molds, especially the overly compacted hay bales in storage. Furthermore, about 80% of the samples were harvested too late. In these cases, the crude fiber content exceeded 340 g/kg DM, and the nutritional value of this horse hay was very low.
