Killing ruminants in Austria for climate protection? No, because it is neither effective nor necessary!
Austria's mountains provide sufficient rainfall for agriculture in many areas. This is beneficial, but in many regions, only grass and forest grow. Forests can be used directly, while grass must first be converted into milk and meat by ruminants. These animals have always done this, and with site-appropriate agriculture, there is virtually no competition with other interests; on the contrary, ecosystem services are provided.
Should we kill ruminants to save the climate? What and how much greenhouse gases do cows emit, and how can we influence this? Have emissions changed over the last century? What would be the consequences of reducing our cow population?
