Prevent heat stress in cattle through appropriate water supply
Increasing heat waves in Central Europe make adapted management and suitable barn technology essential for preventing heat stress. It is especially important to ensure the water supply for the animals.
Water is not only indispensable for vital processes in the body, but also serves temperature regulation. Insufficient water intake has far‑reaching negative consequences for the health and performance of cattle. Due to climate change, dry periods and longer lasting heat periods are increasing in Austria. Therefore, it is necessary to secure the animals' supply through sustainable water management and an adapted drinking system.
In hot weather, cattle drink up to 180 liters of water per day. Therefore it is important to provide the animals with water of the highest quality and properly designed troughs. In this podcast we discuss the resulting opportunities and challenges.
