Cultivation of new crops such as edible legumes and sweet potatoes
Besides increased resistance to drought and heat, the change in eating habits opens up an opportunity for new crops. Especially regional, plant‑based foods such as edible legumes and sweet potatoes are new sources of income.
The increase of plant-based nutrition means a change in agricultural production. Lower demand for feed enables more extensive management. Such cultivated crops like food legumes are stable against fluctuating influences. They can be cultivated well on less productive sites, deliver a good yield and thus contribute to efficient food supply. Also sweet potatoes can make a larger contribution here in the future.
The questions arising from this are discussed by Dr. Andreas Steinwidder in this podcast with the head of our external office for Biological Arable Farming in Lambach, DI Daniel Lehner.
