Utilization of mushroom residues in organic pig feed

The production and consumption of organic gourmet mushrooms has been steadily increasing in Austria for years. As a by-product of the marketable mushrooms, remnants of the mushroom fruiting bodies are generated, which are still present on the substrate at the end of the harvest season.

When these mushroom remnants are harvested, substrate residues remain, rendering them unsuitable for food processing. Currently, the only possible use for the mushroom remnants is composting , i.e., using them as fertilizer.

In line with the cascading use of resources, this project therefore examines whether mushroom residues from organic king oyster mushrooms preserved as silage , and whether the silage is accepted by pigs as (roughage) feed .

The aim is, on the one hand, additional benefits from the mushroom residues before using them as fertilizer, and on the other hand, to offer organic pigs an attractive roughage for enrichment and possibly to tap into an additional source of nutrients.
