Participation of HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein in the international collaboration on land use and flood protection as well as water protection in the Danube region with further measures
The INTERREG project CAMARO-D formed the basis for the application of proven and further developed management routines in land use and their impact on the water regime. The transnational network of nine Danube countries and 14 project partners from public administration and expert circles provided the institutional framework. The initiatives were adapted to their respective areas of impact and further developed in collaboration with practitioners and participating institutions. Awareness-raising took place within the regions with the relevant stakeholder groups.
A key focus, alongside preventive measures, was the development of guidance for function-oriented land use, including the relevant tools and transnational expert exchange, as well as the creation of a land-use development concept for different land-use forms. Professional exchange and knowledge transfer, also via educational institutions and the public, formed the basis for implementation. The implementation and evaluation of pilot projects as best practices in the partner regions is an important follow-up strategy. Current directives, regulations, and interventions provide the framework for implementation initiatives. These include, in addition to the EU Water Framework Directive, the EU Floods Directive, the EU Nitrates Directive with the national Nitrate Action Programme, and the Invasive Species Ordinance, the EU Restoration Regulation, for example in the area of "Man-Made Habitats," and the EU Soil Monitoring Directive. These regulations influence land-use development and the respective economic sectors and, along with changing environmental influences, necessitate ongoing adjustments.
The contribution of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein includes, among other things, the interrelationship between agriculture and drinking water protection, nature conservation, and protection against flooding, erosion, and invasive plant species. Based on these findings, further initiatives in grassland management within and outside protected areas, alpine pasture farming, the site-optimized selection of resilient crop species, adapted management practices for wet meadows in grassland, and site-appropriate revegetation are key areas of focus. The research fields of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein are continuously adapted to changing conditions and new challenges, and are reflected in new projects, initiatives, teaching modules and formats, as well as training and continuing education events.
