The IPCC recommends Tier 1 or Tier 2 methods for this purpose. A more precise Tier 3 method is not yet available in Austria due to a lack of corresponding measurement data. However, with the herd at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein and an existing respiration chamber, it is possible national measurements .
The project four typical feed rations for sheep: various winter feed rations and pasture feeding. Groups of six animals each are adapted to the respective feed for three weeks. The methane emissions of the groups are then measured in a respiration chamber. Each feed variant is repeated four times.
The aim of the project is to develop a national Tier 3 assessment of methane emissions depending on the animals' feeding and nutrient intake .
