To coincide with the iris bloom, the Ministry of Agriculture invites everyone to Styria for an event entitled "The Enns in Bloom," to celebrate the Enns River habitat together with the Styrian government, experts, and local residents. The occasion is the 30th anniversary of the LIFE program, a European Union funding initiative that has enabled Austria to provide significant impetus for environmental and species conservation – including along the Enns River.
Rivers are the lifeblood of our landscape. To preserve their diverse functions for future generations, we must protect these habitats. For 30 years, visionary projects have been planned and implemented within the framework of the EU's LIFE program – bringing citizens, authorities, businesses, and organizations closer together in climate and environmental work.
Celebrating successes: More than 70 LIFE projects in Austria
The 30th anniversary will be celebrated with a two-day conference at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein agricultural college and a festive event on the Enns River. Numerous experts will showcase their implemented LIFE projects on Austrian waterways and exchange valuable experiences. "I am delighted that we have been able to build up such comprehensive expertise in recent years. Around 75 successfully implemented projects in Austria would not have been possible without our dedicated experts. We want to highlight this success with a brochure that we are publishing to mark the anniversary," explains Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig, adding: "With an investment of around 330 million euros, the LIFE program in Austria is having a positive impact on our waterways, forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems, as well as on endangered animal species. The people in the respective regions also benefit from this."
The people of the Enns Valley, in particular, can experience LIFE firsthand. Various LIFE projects have already been implemented along the Enns River and in its surrounding area. Currently, the Enns is a pilot water body in the LIFE IRIS project, which bridges the gap between flood protection and ecological enhancement – for a greener, more biodiverse region. LIFE measures often have multifunctional effects and trigger investments in the region. For Provincial Councillor Hans Seitinger, this is a clear benefit: "The diverse advantages of LIFE projects, from flood protection to engaging educational opportunities and from fascinating recreational areas to nature conservation, create a high level of public acceptance. LIFE projects are an enrichment for our province."
Together with the next generation for a sustainable water future
The festivities at the Trautenfels Enns Bridge will round off the 30th anniversary celebrations. A highlight will be the opening of the barefoot path, created by students of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein as part of a project. A diverse program of events – from microscopy of aquatic life to birdwatching – will offer exciting insights into the Enns habitat for both young and old.
