His professional career in Gumpenstein began in the field of root crops and cereal production. In 1989, Bernhard Krautzer transferred to the then-existing root crops department, and later, after the merger of the cereal production and root crops departments, he served as head of section. With his assumption of responsibilities for forage crop breeding and vegetation technology from 1994 onwards, he provided significant impetus for the further development of the Raumberg-Gumpenstein research site. In 1995, he received his doctorate from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). From 1997, he served as deputy head of the institute, and in 2020, he assumed the directorship of the Institute of Crop Production and Cultural Landscape Research.
His scientific work initially focused on forage plant breeding and the development of site-adapted grassland mixtures. Numerous varieties, mixtures, and recommendations for Austrian grassland farming bear his signature. He consistently combined scientific precision with a strong practical focus and a clear understanding of the challenges facing agriculture under diverse site conditions.
In the following years, his work increasingly focused on vegetation technology, land reclamation, and biodiversity. Whether high-altitude vegetation management, greening of technical interventions, regional wildflower seed mixtures, wildflower strips, or biodiversity projects – Bernhard Krautzer recognized and scientifically supported numerous developments at an early stage. His commitment to regional plant seeds and to the preservation and promotion of plant biodiversity in the cultural landscape is particularly noteworthy. Many initiatives and standards that are now established throughout Austria were co-developed or significantly influenced by his work.
Dr. Krautzer also had an excellent international network. He initiated and led numerous national and international research projects and participated in a multitude of European collaborations. In doing so, he brought not only valuable scientific impetus but also important partnerships and expertise to the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. His extensive list of publications impressively documents the breadth and continuity of his scientific work over many decades.
Alongside research and project work, knowledge transfer was always of particular importance to him. Whether teaching at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, at specialist events, excursions, conferences, or in direct exchange with practitioners, administrators, and academics – Bernhard Krautzer had a knack for explaining complex concepts clearly and inspiring people with his subjects. Colleagues valued him as a dedicated scientist, a creative visionary, and a reliable contact person.
He also shaped the organizational structure of Haus Raumberg-Gumpenstein for many years – among other things as institute director, organizer of numerous conferences, and through his participation in specialist groups, working groups, and scientific networks. Furthermore, his influence is evident in the design of the grounds, particularly in the many aesthetically pleasing areas.
Retirement marks the end of an exceptionally diverse and formative professional career.
The entire HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein community extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bernhard Krautzer for his tremendous dedication, innovative spirit, and long-standing connection to our institution. We wish Bernhard good health, much joy, many fulfilling projects, and continued success in this new chapter of his life – and a keen eye for the right balance.
