Soil fertility depends crucially on the number, diversity, and activity of soil organisms.

The most important function of soil organisms in the grassland ecosystem is the decomposition of organic matter and the return of the nutrients it contains to the respective nutrient cycles. The performance of soil organisms is determined by local environmental conditions (soil properties, climate) and the availability of food.

Most soil organisms prefer loose, well-aerated, warm, moderately acidic to neutral (pH 5.0-7.0), nutrient-rich, and moist soils. Plant roots are a continuous source of nutrients for soil organisms. Therefore, a large root mass and vigorous root growth promote soil life. Crucial for high biological activity in the soil is a sufficiently high and continuous supply of energy- and nutrient-rich nutrients.

This is achieved through regular fertilization with small amounts of different farm fertilizers (manure, compost, slurry) during the growing season.
