Horse Forum_2023

1st Ennstaler Horse Forum

1st Ennstaler Horse Forum

Under bright sunshine and summery temperatures, the first horse forum took place at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein on Friday, October 13, 2023. A hybrid event was held with the aim of presenting traditions and innovations through practical demonstrations and expert presentations

Passing on traditional knowledge to younger generations, but also professional exchange among like-minded people were the main goals of the speakers.

Following the opening ceremony at the research facility by President of the Austrian Rural Riders and Drivers Association, Wolfgang Ehmeier from HödlGut in Oftering, accompanied by his two young mares, began his teaching session in the round pen. Characterized by extensive knowledge, calm demeanor, and great trust, the participants were able to gain insights into the first steps with young horses towards becoming safe driving and working horses, with elements of horsemanship playing a central role.

Karl Neubauer from St. Georgen an der Stiefing demonstrated essential aspects of rural horse-drawn carriages with his Tiger team, highlighting the high value placed on local and providing practical recommendations, always keeping safety in mind. He also gave expert instructions on adapting and using a Victoria carriage and a ladder wagon.

For all breeding enthusiasts and lovers of the Noriker breed, two stallions were subsequently presented: Firstly, the 2nd reserve champion of his 2023 licensing, the typical black stallion Eiskogel Nero XV (born 2021) by Eisenhut Nero XIV, bred by Erwin Possegger and owned by the LPZV Styria, presented by the Ernst Schrempf breeding station, Mitterberg-St. Martin; and secondly, the beautifully colored black pinto Hollerberg Vulkan XVIII (born 2019) by Herbst Vulkan XIV, bred by Klement Kleinferchner and presented by Franz Hornbacher, Lassing.

After the first part of the event, the program moved to the Grimming Hall, where it continued with expert presentations

Harald Reicher, Managing Director of the Styrian State Horse Breeding Association, spoke about current breeding and support measures (ÖPUL 2023-27) and presented an impressive activity report on the breeding development of the Noriker horse as well as current figures and statistics on this breed.

He was followed by Wolfgang Ehmeier, who addressed the requirements and safety aspects of handling driving and working horses with great emphasis and emotion, revealing his good feel for horses, but also for difficult situations as his constant companions.

Karl Neubauer presented his extensive knowledge and experience to the audience, explaining how to ensure the safe organization of traditional processions and outlining the legal requirements for participation, as well as for travel to and from events. It will certainly be necessary in the future to conduct thorough training sessions and informational events to clarify existing ambiguities.

Franz Titschenbacher, President of the Styrian Chamber of Agriculture, addressed current issues in his closing remarks, as well as the importance of the equine industry in agriculture and forestry. His appeal to further promote and strengthen cooperation across all institutions for continued success was a fitting conclusion to this practical conference, which, due to the positive attendance figures and the generous support of sponsors and exhibitors, will be held again next year.
