Plant diversity depends on many factors

Plant diversity is an important criterion for nature conservation assessments. High plant diversity indicates the high ecological value of a grassland area. Plant diversity is also a measure of the ecological sustainability of grassland management. Site-appropriate management contributes to maintaining or increasing plant diversity.

The diversity of plant species depends on many factors.

This includes:

  • regional species pool
  • Stress and disturbance at the site (intensity of current and former use)
  • Site heterogeneity
  • Nutrient availability in the soil
  • Productivity (aboveground phytomass production)
  • Growth form of the dominant species
