International Day of Plant Health

The International Day of Plant Health is celebrated worldwide on May 12th.

At HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, we also conduct research in this area and offer solutions and support for agricultural practice. Key objectives include increasing biodiversity, protecting the environment, and promoting economic development.

Biodiversity is strongly promoted through mixed cropping, ecologically diverse varieties, and the management of flowering strips, fruit trees, and extensive grassland areas. Special measures such as undersowing and wide row spacing with extensive management to attract ground-nesting birds are also implemented.

The concept of environmental protection is served primarily through organic farming, but also in detail through the cultivation of legumes (pulses), both for food and feed. The cultivation of diverse cover crop mixtures and permanent greening is also taken into account.

To promote not only economic development but also future sustainability, new crops that can cope well with changing climatic conditions play a crucial role. The range extends from undemanding edible legumes to vegetable crops, sweet potatoes, and melons. However, the resistance of established crops to diseases and pests is also essential; this is something we have always worked on.
