Green Mountain: Sustainable development models for mountain areas

Mountain areas are important habitats and ecosystems that face a variety of hazards and threats. Due to the generally difficult economic situation, the population often migrates.

In order to prevent this, one-sided attention is often paid to strengthening the economy in the short term, without taking into account the potential and demands of the special mountain landscape. Negative consequences of unadapted development strategies for mining areas include the deterioration of local ecosystems and the associated loss of locally adapted animal and plant species as well as the disappearance of traditional cultural landscapes and assets.

In the Green Mountain project, management models are developed and implemented that are intended to enable integrated, sustainable use, value creation and conservation of protected mountain areas.

Three main topic areas are being worked on with international partners:

    • Identification of economic activities compatible with the sustainable development of mountain areas
    • Development of integrated management plans
    • Compilation of methods and strategies for raising awareness, informing and training the population of these areas

The more precise project goals include

    • The development of common methods and strategies for an integrated and coordinated management of sensitive mountain areas.
    • Identification of activities and products through which regional development can be promoted
    • Further development of strategies and their regional advantages and values
    • Introduction of management plans and improvement of financial measures
    • Creating awareness among political and economic decision-makers in the respective region
    • Creation of a network among the project partners and sharing of information and experiences
