flooring in pig farming is currently in the public eye. With the ruling of the Constitutional Court published on January 8, 2024 to shorten the transition period until the ban on unstructured full-slatted pens, the discussion was reignited and the uncertainty in the pig industry increased.
The HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein has been dedicated to this topic for several years: Together with project partners from science, consulting and practice, the IBeSt project was launched in 2021: “Innovations for existing breeding and fattening stables for pigs in Austria – for the benefit of animals and people ” ) came into being. By the end of 2025, conversion solutions towards greater animal welfare for existing fully slatted stables will be examined and best practice examples for conventional pig farming will be shown.
You can find out exactly what is being done in this project and what the current status is in the new podcast with Andreas Steinwidder and project manager Birgit Heidinger.
