First animal experiment course for large animals

Research projects with farm animals, such as those carried out at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, sometimes fall under the Austrian Animal Experimentation Act, for example when blood samples are taken for experimental purposes. Six colleagues from the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein acquired the relevant expertise in a course at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna in recent weeks.

This animal experiment course for large animals was held for the first time and is based on a joint initiative by the Direktor of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein Dr. Johann Gasteiner and the rector of the veterinary university, Prof. Dr. Petra Winter back.

Theoretical units on the legal framework, ethics, statistics, anesthesia and alternatives to animal testing were followed by two days of practical exercises with cattle, sheep and pigs in the clinics of the veterinary university. All participants successfully passed the final exam on February 28th. (Lisa Baldinger)
