Drought - Agriculture challenged

The drought is posing major challenges for many farms this year. The cold and dry spring already resulted in significantly reduced initial grass growth in many areas. The summer drought further exacerbated the situation, with some regions having a massive impact on yields and forage quality.

The impact varies considerably across Austria. Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and parts of Styria. In some regions, the lack of rainfall meant that the cattle drive down from the mountain pastures had to be brought forward significantly. For many farms, this means that feed reserves must be used earlier than usual. The major challenge now is ensuring the animals' food supply throughout the autumn and winter.

Aid packages are important in this situation, but they cannot fully mitigate the economic consequences. Therefore, consumer support: those who consciously choose local food products when shopping and dining out strengthen regional agriculture and help to secure the long-term supply of high-quality food from Austria.
