As part of the organic viticulture certificate course on May 11, 2023, in Wagna, Wilhelm Graiss and Katharina Gassner-Speckmoser gave a series of lectures on the establishment and maintenance of modern cover crops in viticulture. The invitation came from the LFI Styria. Staff from the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein presented scientific trials and results related to the ongoing LIFE project VineAdapt.
Following the interesting lectures at Retz Castle, the nearly 20 participants were able to contribute their company-specific approaches and thoughts on the topics at the workshop “Biodiversity in viticulture” and “Adaptation to climate change”.
During the subsequent field visit at the VineAdapt partner winery "Neue Heimat" in Gamlitz, participants toured biodiversity vineyards. In recent years, rows of trees have been expertly sown with species-rich mixtures, and the daisies were already in bloom. This diversity of species will provide food and nesting opportunities for insects. For interested visitors, a vibrant display of blossoms unfolds among the vines.
Cellar master Christian Söll answered the questions of the course participants and hopes that the biodiversity of the sown areas will be preserved for many years through extensive maintenance.
