Berkshire - the "Kobe beef" of pigs

In Austria, the Berkshire pig breed, considered the oldest breed in Great Britain, is relatively unknown. Its name derives from the county of Berkshire, located west of London in southern England.

The most striking visual feature is the kink in their snouts; the animals are also smaller than our native white breeds. Their meat is considered particularly delicious due to its high degree of marbling (fat veins running through the meat). Some even claim that Berkshires are the Kobe beef of the pig world. At the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein agricultural college, frozen semen from the Berkshire boars Randy (pictured) and Richie is available. Offspring from a mating with white pigs are expected in the coming weeks.
