1st Meeting of the practice group “Cow‑tethered calf rearing“

Cow-calf rearing is an innovative system in dairy farming. The EU project TransformDairyNet aims to examine practical systems for cow-calf rearing and to facilitate the exchange and transfer of knowledge on this topic. Eleven European countries are participating in this project. In these countries, farmers will work in practical groups to address current issues and future innovations in cow-calf rearing.

The first meeting of the Austria-wide practical group "Cow-calf rearing in dairy farming" took place in December 2024 at the Bio-Institute of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein at the Moarhof farm. The project was presented by the practical group moderator for Austria, Jakob Gadermaier, from Bio Austria Upper Austria. After presentations from the participating farms, a tour of the Moarhof barns was conducted. Following this, a workshop was held to identify challenges in cow-calf rearing and to solutions and innovations . The colleagues at HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein will focus their future research on this topic and express their gratitude for the excellent collaboration within this practice-oriented working group.
