ÖNGENE Conference in Gumpenstein

Conservation of endangered livestock breeds – very successful

animal breeding officials from all federal states met at the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. The seminar, organized by the Austrian Society for Genetic Conservation ( ÖNGENE ), focused on exchanging experiences with measures for the conservation of endangered livestock breeds within the Austrian Agri-Environmental Programme (ÖPUL).

The Austrian Network for Endangered Livestock Breeds (ÖNGENE) serves as a platform for direct coordination between breeding associations, state animal breeding officers, scientists, and the Ministry of Agriculture. This consolidation of collaboration within the ÖNGENE platform is unique to Austria and enables a timely response to problems in the conservation breeding of endangered livestock breeds. The Bio-Institute of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, located at the Wels/Thalheim branch, is managed by veterinarian Beate Berger.

22% more animals supported

All responsible breeding organizations presented their results and experiences with the new ÖPUL (Austrian Program for Environmentally Sound Agriculture) measure . The measure was rated very positively by all, and it is particularly gratifying that it has been so well received and implemented by breeders. For example, the number of supported, heritage-worthy farm animals increased from approximately 36,000 in 2016 to more than 44,000 in 2023. The board of ÖNGENE and the management thanked all participating breeding organizations for their excellent cooperation and the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein for its organizational support and the use of its outstanding infrastructure.
