Review of the Gumpenstein Greening Conference 2025

The Gumpenstein Greening Conference took place on June 3, 2025, under the theme "Promoting Biodiversity in the Cultural Landscape ." Experts from agriculture, science, nature conservation, and practitioners exchanged information on current findings and practical experiences.

The focus was on:

  • Flowering strips in agricultural landscapes: They promote pollinators and beneficial insects and contribute to ecological enhancement. Crucial factors are species-rich, site-appropriate mixtures as well as adequate planting and maintenance measures.
  • Biodiversity areas with regional seeds: Native species strengthen genetic diversity and promote stable populations. Projects have shown how certified regional seeds support biodiversity and habitat connectivity.
  • Grassland and pollinators: Extensively managed grassland provides important habitats for wild bees, wasps, hoverflies, butterflies, beetles, spiders, grasshoppers... Measures such as later mowing dates sustainably promote biodiversity.

The conference impressively demonstrated the diverse possibilities for promoting biodiversity in the cultural landscape and highlighted the important levers that flowering strips, biodiversity areas with regional seeds, and biodiversity-friendly grassland management represent in order to sustainably increase both plant and animal diversity in the cultural landscape.
