Forest sheep

In recent years, enormous efforts have been made to preserve endangered livestock breeds. Forest sheep are ideally suited for grassland management, extensive and organic small-scale farming in the "disadvantaged" areas of the low mountain regions with harsh climates.

Forest sheep farming offers an alternative for small-scale, often part-time farms that cannot be managed with extensive machinery. In addition to its noteworthy characteristics, such as undemanding nature, excellent forage utilization, non-seasonal availability, and high fertility, the very good meat quality is a significant advantage. The Suffolk sheep is used as a crossbreeding partner to improve carcass quality. It is a sheep breed with good meat growth and dressing percentage.
The aim of this project is to investigate the meat quality of crossbred Forest Sheep x Suffolk lambs and purebred Forest Sheep lambs at three different fattening times and to obtain data for advising on endangered breeds.
