The efficient use of scarce resources is one of the major future issues in agriculture. In organic dairy farming in particular, the question arises: Do dairy cows need to be fed high-quality feed suitable for human consumption, such as grain or legumes – or are there sustainable alternatives?
This is precisely where the new research project By-Product in: It investigates whether and how it is possible to do without food-grade concentrated feed components without negatively impacting animal health and performance.
Scientifically sound – practical implementation
project By-Product will start in October 2025 at the Organic Institute of the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein. The aim is to test the replacement of conventional organic concentrated feeds such as corn, grain or peas with fiber-rich alternatives – such as organic beet pulp and clover-alfalfa pellets – in the first months of lactation.
The study examines the effects on feed and nutrient intake, nutrient requirement coverage, milk yield, body condition, and metabolic and fertility parameters of organic dairy cows. Furthermore, economic viability and practical feeding strategies are evaluated.
project By-Product links sound animal nutrition with issues of circular economy, regionality, and social acceptance. The trials take place under realistic organic conditions and deliver results that can be directly incorporated into consulting, practical application, and quality programs. Broad involvement of students, consultants, and feed companies, as well as extensive dissemination of the results, are also planned.
