The basis for this implementation of a GIS database with high temporal and spatial resolution soil temperatures for Austria is information on the soil (field capacity, sand content) and the development of selected crops (grassland and maize) influenced by management effects. The spatial resolution in this development is 250 meters, while the temporal resolution refers to a daily combination of weather data with soil information for calculating soil moisture and the development of aboveground biomass. The starting point for the GIS application is a location-based soil temperature model that uses continuous grid surfaces of the entire study area (Austria) on a daily basis instead of individual numerical values. This requires the daily surface data for the daily minimum, maximum, and mean air temperatures, global radiation, precipitation, the Penman-Monteith calculated and interpolated reference evapotranspiration, the modeled snow cover, and static information on available field capacity, soil sand content, and crop-specific albedo.
