Sheep wool as bedding and composting material for on-farm utilization

Domestic sheep wool has lost significant value in Austria. A considerable amount of sheep wool is produced annually on Austrian farms. In 2023, for example, almost 800,000 kg of wool was produced. A lack of sales opportunities means that shearing costs often exceed the product's value. Composting and on-farm utilization of the nutrients can contribute to increasing its value. This practical trial aims to ensure the sustainable use of sheep wool in a way that meets the specific requirements of small-scale Austrian sheep farming. During the grazing season, sheep wool is used together with straw as bedding in deep-litter barns and subsequently composted.

The main goal of the project is to demonstrate a way to make sensible use of sheep's wool on one's own farm and to produce valuable fertilizer through effective composting.
