These problems arise from the use of primarily untreated seed. Weather conditions can lead to disease issues, which can subsequently result in the seed being rejected.
To market grain rejected as seed as consumer grain, certain minimum quality requirements, especially for wheat, must be met, such as a sufficient protein content and falling number.
The question that arises, and which needs to be answered experimentally, is: How much nitrogen is required to produce grain intended for use as seed?
Simultaneously, it will be determined whether the grain—even if rejected as seed—still has a high protein content, making its use as consumer grain economically viable for the farmer. Furthermore, various varieties should be cultivated, ideally including varieties bred for the specific needs of organic farming. Winter wheat is the primary grain variety being studied.
The Upper Murtal region and Lambach were selected as locations, with seed propagation playing a key role in the Upper Murtal. The trial in Lambach is representative of the seed propagation companies in Upper Austria that have already converted to organic production.
