Establishment and maintenance of permanent green cover crops in fruit and wine growing

Permanent vegetation cover in drive lanes should be managed in the same way as intensively managed grassland. Through knowledge transfer from the grassland sector, combined with the development of specific seed mixtures and cover strategies, significant improvements or solutions to problems can be achieved in vineyards in southern and eastern Styria and in all fruit-growing areas with permanently vegetated drive lanes.

The research project aims to establish existing grassland technology in viticulture and fruit growing, as well as to develop new strategies for the composition, establishment, and maintenance of permanent cover crops.
The following research projects will be implemented on suitable areas of the Silberberg Viticulture and Fruit Growing Center in the coming years:

  • Development and use of new greening mixtures
  • Renovation/improvement of existing vegetation through reseeding
  • New planting with split mixtures
  • Subsequent establishment of split mixtures
  • Use of alternative cover crops
